Vettaiyan is an electrifying Rajinikanth-starrer that combines gripping action with a strong narrative, delving into social themes with a racy investigation at its core. The first half offers an exhilarating ride, kicking off with 20 minutes of pure superstar magic, where Rajini's iconic style and mass appeal take center stage. As the film progresses, it shifts into a high-octane crime investigation, keeping audiences hooked.

Director TJ Gnanavel skillfully tackles a socially relevant plot, combining commentary on encounter killings and the pressures of India’s education system.

Plot:

The film revolves around SP Athiyan (Rajinikanth), an encounter specialist who straddles the line between justice and law. His world is turned upside down when Saranya (Dushara), a fearless teacher fighting against injustice, is tragically killed. This pushes Athiyan into a whirlpool of questions, leading him to a complex conspiracy involving Nataraj (Rana Daggubati), a corporate giant with secrets to hide. Rajini, true to form, carries the film with his swagger and larger-than-life persona, but in a refreshing change, the story doesn’t rely solely on his stardom, focusing more on its social commentary and narrative.

Performance:

Rajinikanth is in top form, bringing depth and energy to Athiyan, a character torn between his duty and personal morals. His dynamic performance, especially in his scenes with Amitabh Bachchan’s DGP Sathyadev, who commands attention with his presence, is a highlight. Fahadh Faasil, though in a limited role, delivers some of the best dialogues and provides light-hearted moments with his impeccable performance.

The emotional beats in Vettaiyan are well-crafted, and the film shines in moments where it connects with the audience on a deeper level. Dushara Vijayan delivers a compelling performance as Sharanya, a character whose courage drives the film’s emotional core. While the supporting cast, including Manju Warrier and Ritika Singh, contribute solidly, it's Rajinikanth and Fahadh who truly steal the limelight.

Anirudh Ravichander’s music and background score are a definite plus, adding a vibrant layer to the action-packed sequences and emotional moments. The Manasilayo song, in particular, stands out for its foot-tapping energy.

However, while Vettaiyan explores important social themes, it sometimes falls into familiar commercial tropes. The second half becomes predictable, and some scenes feel overextended, especially in the depiction of Sharanya’s tragic fate, which might come across as insensitive.

Despite these minor setbacks, Vettaiyan is a solid entertainer, seamlessly blending action, investigation, and social commentary. Rajinikanth’s larger-than-life presence, combined with Anirudh’s fantastic score and TJ Gnanavel’s tactful direction, make this a worthy watch. Vettaiyan is bound to be remembered as a trendsetter, cementing Rajini's place in 2024's cinematic landscape.
