Stereotypical love is not only in the movies but exists in real life too
We tend to think that romantic movies only show stereotypical relationships that are a far cry from reality. The classic formula of "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy and girl get back together and live happily ever after" has been overdone on TV, literature, and film. This to the point where the idea of long-lasting relationships are seen as unreachable fantasies.
Here is a list to restore your faith in Love.
1. WHEN HARRY MET SALLY (1989)
“When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." It's because of this compelling line that this movie had to appear on our list. Apart from that, it's not the best movie. It's just a romantic comedy that has survived the passing of time and can be very enjoyable if you're looking for something to Netflix and chill with. Moreover, this movie can be perfect to vindicate love as one of the main drives of our life.
2. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)
This heartwarming gothic fairytale set in a suburban neighborhood in the United States shows us that nothing can defeat true love, not even an eerie appearance and a misunderstood personality. This film recreates Beauty and the Beast's idea of a couple opposing a world that can't understand how completely different beings can manage to embrace in a passionate and tender love. That's the magic of Tim Burton's story.
3. BRAM STOCKER'S DRACULA (1992)
It was all anticipated in the original movie poster: "Love never dies." Despite being a horror movie, its implied message is that love can break the walls of time and distance. The story of a bloodthirsty being might not seem that romantic. However, the implied eroticism of Bram Stoker's story and the visuals of Ford Coppola work perfectly to portray a passionate love story between the Count and Mina Harker.
4. GOOD WILL HUNTING (1997)
A lonely psychologist who lost the love of his life and a young math genius who's searching for a place in this world –and in a girl's heart– will show us a very radical vision of true love. Loving someone implies finding and caring about ourselves, so we can touch our loved one's soul as well.
5. SIDEWAYS (2004)
This excellent comedy is the story of two good friends traveling through Santa Barbara's wine country days before the wedding of one of them. It soon becomes an ode to love, freedom, and loyalty. Despite the fact that it sometimes questions the existence of love, Sideways also gives hope and makes us see that sometimes true feelings can be found in the least expected moments.
6. AMOUR (2012)
Anne and Georges are the embodiment of true love: they grew old next to the love of their life, despite having pain as a constant in their lives. It's a unique film that depicts how sometimes our feelings and passions can be drastically put to the test by hard and painful life choices. Living all your life next to someone shapes your personality as well as your capacity to understand your partner's decision.
7. MOONRISE KINGDOM (2012)
True love is not completely related to maturity. This is what Moonrise Kingdom teaches us through a love story where two kids put to the test adulthood's outdated ideas. Watching this movie with the love of your life will take you back to your past to remember all those things we're able to achieve when we're madly in love with someone. This movie has become a classic that future generations will definitely relate to.
8. SAFE HAVEN (2013)
Most of life's sense is related to making difficult choices and following our hearts. The protagonist of the movie is a young woman who abandons her painful life to start over in a new city. For those couples who enjoy cuddling, this is the ideal movie to do so while learning that love can overcome any test, even the most painful ones.
9. IN YOUR EYES (2014)
Love is an open door that allows us to enter magical and dark realms. In this movie, two strangers, Dylan and Rebecca, realize they have feelings for the other, even though they're thousands of miles apart. Is it possible for an intense emotional connection to cross the barriers of distance and unite two hearts? Welcome to love's twilight zone...
10. BRIGHT STAR (2009)
Poetic, dramatic, and romantic, this movie explores the love relationship between a poet and the woman who would inspire, as well as be inspired by, his words. Mixing fatalism and the lightness of love, this movie depicts the last years of the famous poet John Keats and his beloved Fanny Brown. Besides being a very visual and emotional film, watching it with your partner will bring you even closer.
Is your trust in love better now?
