Not everyday do we find out that the Hollywood film industry has taken content, inspiration and more from the Bollywood film industry

It has always been said that the Indian film industry has always copied or taken inspiration from Hollywood films. But right here you will see it is not just the Indian film Industry but also the Hollywood Film Industry that takes inspiration from Indian films.

Here are a few Honourable mentions, mainly 10 films that got inspiration from Indian movies.

1) LEAP YEAR (2010) - JAB WE MET (2007)

Leap Year is a 2010 American romantic comedy film directed by Anand Tucker, and starring Amy Adams and Matthew Goode. Written by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, the film is about a woman who heads to Ireland to ask her boyfriend to accept her wedding proposal on leap day, when tradition supposedly holds that men cannot refuse a woman's proposal for marriage. Her plans are interrupted by a series of increasingly unlikely events and are further complicated when she hires a handsome Irish innkeeper to take her to her boyfriend in Dublin.

Bollywood: Jab We Met (2007)

Jab We Met (When We Met) is a film that tells the story of a feisty Punjabi girl who is sent off track when she bumps into a depressed Mumbai businessman on an overnight train to Delhi. While attempting to get him back on board when he alights at a station stop, both are left stranded in the middle of nowhere. Having walked out of his corporate business after being dumped by his girlfriend, the man has no destination in mind, until the girl forces him to accompany her back home and then on to elope with her secret boyfriend.

Even though the script is not word for word you can clearly see the similarities and the concept that is taken from movie. who would've thought that Hollywood had to look for a love story in Bollywood.


2) WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON (2004) - RANGEELA (1995)

Win a Date With Tad Hamilton is a film about a small-town girl who wins a date with a male celebrity through a contest. When the date goes better than expected, a love triangle forms between the girl, the male celebrity, and the girl's best friend.

Bollywood: Rangeela (1995)

Rangeela is a movie that was a huge success in the Block buster that revolves around a girl named Mili, Mili has dreams of becoming an actress. Munna is Mili's friend, who grew up with mili and had eventually become best friend's with her. As she works as an extra in different movies an actor Raj Kamal notices her. When Raj Kamal spots Mili he asks her to play the female lead in his next movie. This leaves Munna upset as he realises he loves Mili.

The two movies revolve around the same issue of a love triangle forming when the girl seems to have fallen in love with a star but then finds out about how their best friend is in love her.


3) FEAR (1996) - DARR (1993)

Fear is a Thriller Film. It revolves around an upper-middle class family whose seemingly perfect existence is threatened when their teenage daughter begins dating an attractive and mysterious young man, much to her father's chagrin.

Bollywood: Darr (1993)

Darr is a movie that revolves around the life of a girl names Kiran who has a stalker named Rahul. Rahul is obsessed with Kiran and stalks her constantly. However, she is engaged to be married to Sunil, a navy officer. When she finally marries Sunil, Rahul goes berserk.

We can clearly see why such a movie was taken for inspiration by the Hollywood film industry, not just a thriller but a film that has the audience at the edge of their seats.


4) DIVORCE INVITATION (2012) - AAHWANAM (1997)

Divorce Invitation is film that ventures into the life of a married couple 'Divorce Invitation' centre's on Mike Christian, a happily married man who runs into his high school sweetheart Alex, and after all these years, sparks still fly. When Mike is determined Alex is his true soul mate, he realises he has a huge problem-he signed an iron-clad pre-nuptial agreement and his wife will not let him out of the marriage.

Bollywood: Aahwanam (1997)

Aahwanam is a movie of a happily married man bumps into an ex who is ready to help him financially, provided he gets divorced. He asks his wife to divorce him, but only legally. She, on the other hand, has other plans. She makes it a point to make known to her husband that if he wants a divorce he must attend the divorce ceremony just as they got married and let everyone know his reasons of wanting a divorce.

Here is a similarity that one can pick out when just reading the synopsis. Both movies that were released between a huge time gap, revolve around the same concept of how the wife wants a formal ceremony like the wedding for their divorce.


5) DELIVERY MAN (2013) - VICKY DONOR (2012)

Hollywood: Delivery Man (2013)

Delivery Man is a film that shows us the life of an ageing slacker and former sperm donor who discovers that he is the biological father of 533 children, and that 142 of them have filed a lawsuit to reveal his identity.

Bollywood: Vicky Donor (2012)

Vicky Donor is a movie that shows the life of a sperm donor. Dr. Baldev, the owner of a fertility clinic and a sperm bank, is in search of a healthy sperm donor. His search ends when he meets Vicky, a handsome young Punjabi boy.


Even though these two movies end up on this list, both are a remake of the film "Starbuck" which was made in Canada. But the Bollywood Industry did release their adaptation of the movie first. This one point makes the two movies to be mentioned on this list.


6) KILL BILL (2003) - ABHAY (2001)

Kill Bill is a movie of revenge that a woman takes against a man named Bill. A pregnant woman, code-named The Bride, goes into a coma after her former boss Bill brutally attacks her. Four years later, she sets out to seek revenge on Bill and his associates.

Bollywood: Abhay (2001)

Abhay is a movie that speaks about the lives of twins where one of them wants to kill people that remind him of his step mother who he murdered. Nandu and Vijay are brothers, who were abused by their stepmother during their younger days. Nandhu, who is mentally ill, decides to kill Vijay's fiancee as he visualizes her as his stepmother.


Both these movies have the same concept of seeking revenge or Killing for their family, even though it is not the perfect example that should be added to this list, I'll leave it here for you to ponder on and do your own research.


7) A COMMON MAN (2013) - A WEDNESDAY (2008)

A common Man is a film that shows us how a terrorist operates inside his own life, a mysterious man plants five bombs around Colombo, Sri Lanka, that will explode unless four terrorists are released from prison.

Bollywood: A Wednesday (2008) 

A Wednesday is a movie about the lengths to which a common man goes to kill terrorists that were in Prison. A retired police commissioner recounts the most memorable case of his career wherein he was informed about a bomb scare in Mumbai.

This is the epitome of a movie that must exist in this list. the Hollywood did not just take inspiration from the Hollywood film but made an exact remake of the film due to it's reviews and love that was given from the audience but along with criticisms. 


8) JUST GO WITH IT (2011) - MAINE PYAAR KYUN KIYA (2005)

Just Go With It is a comedy that gives us the joy of watching a romance bloom between people who would've never thought of it in that way. A plastic surgeon convinces his assistant to join him and his young girlfriend on a trip to Hawaii and pose as his to-be ex-wife to cover a lie, but ends up complicating the situation further

Bollywood: Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005)

Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya is a film on the lie filled life of a doctor named Samir. Samir is in love with Sonia but has unfortunately lied to her that he was already married. When she wants to meet her wife,Samir approaches his dutiful nurse Naina to play 'wife'a drama that turns out into a comedy of errors.

These two movies earn a place on this list for being more than similar and following almost to the dot the same story line. So much for creativity.


9) HITCH (2005) - CHHOTI SI BAAT (1975)

Hitch is a film that shows how not so confident men employ the services of a professional man who will help them be interesting to the women they like. Despite helping several men woo women with his magical formula, Alex Hitchens, a professional date doctor, finds it difficult to strike a conversation with Sara, a gossip columnist.

Bollywood: Chhoti Si Baat (1975)

Chhoti Si Baat is a movie on the struggles of a young, shy man go after the woman he loves. A timid suitor seeks the help of a ruthless colonel to win the woman of his dreams when a bold young man begins to pursue her in this romantic comedy.

These two movies have a lot of similarities, but are not exacts of each other. the concept is clearly seen through the plot of both the movies.


10) PEARL HARBOR (2001) - SANGAM (1964)

Pearl Harbor talks of the hardships of families and relationships during the second world war and how they got through everything that stood in their way. Childhood friends Rafe and Danny become army pilots and meet Evelyn, a navy nurse. Later, the three of them find themselves caught in the middle of a great tragedy, the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Bollywood: Sangam (1964)

Sangam is a movie that revolves around the romance between 3 friends who grew up together. When Sunder gets rejected by Radha, he sets out to prove his worth to her. He eventually manages to get married to her but is in for a rude shock when he comes across a love letter.

Even though both the movies have different story lines, you can put one and two together and see the similarities of each while comparing them to one another.

These movies prove that there have been movies in India that the Hollywood film industry take inspiration and content from because of it's immense creativity and popularity with the audience.
