Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the franchise's seventh film, had filled the fans with hope with the release of its trailer and the judgement day has finally arrived. Before we get into the positives and the negatives, here’s a quick recap of what the entire gang has been upto in the film’s universe for you new watchers out there.
The entire franchise is based on the battle between Autobots, the heroes and Decepticons, the villains. This war between these cybertronian races happens on Earth. This is the basic outline of the plot. But, if you are planning to watch the recent release, you need to know a little bit more about the cybertronian race and their origins.
During the creation of the universe, Primus (the light) and Unicron (the evil twin brother) were created by the One. An everlasting battle ensued between the opposing forces which ended with Primus turning into a planet called Cybertron and Unicron being banished into a prison-like cosmic vessel. Years later, this planet also fell into the hands of a corrupt, discriminatory system. Orion Pax, being chosen by the consciousness of Primus, is transformed into Optimus Prime. Optimus’s former friend, Megatron, leads a rebellion against the ruling class and forms the Decepticons. The battle that ensues between the Autobots and Decepticons nearly destroys the planet and the Cybertronians are sent to other planets to seek refuge. Decepticons follows them and thus earth witnesses one of the most thrilling battles.
Some additional information before you watch this jaw-dropping film on the big screen:
• The “gorilla robot” that many of you saw in the trailers is a Maximal. Maximals are not just in the form of gorillas by the way. Maximals, are actually Autobots that adapted to the environment by mimicking animals.
• Similarly, there are Predacons. They are Decepticons who followed a similar suit as the Maximals.
• Terracons are another type of Decepticons. They are created by injecting Dark Energon into dead transformers.
Ok, so that is all the essential info that you need before you watch the movie. Now, without spoiling much, onto the review.
Honestly speaking, I was a bit skeptical about the newest addition to the franchise. It is a well-known fact that the movie's predecessors were not up to our expectations. Even though ‘Bumblebee’ was a refreshing watch, most of them were just painful to watch. None of them held a candle to the OG Transformers.
Well, I was wrong about this one. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is not disappointing- to say the least. Of course, I stayed for the visuals and it is guaranteed that the mechanical war will keep you on the edge of your seats. The movie is, all you expect from an action movie and it fills your basic demands for a sci-fi/fantasy. So, all in all, it meets the bare minimum requirements for a recommendation.
When creating franchises, what often happens is that directors try to squeeze out excessive materials from a minimum amount of resources. This ends up giving us tiring plots, cliché tropes, etc. With that being said, this is exactly what the franchise has been providing us with- constant disappointments. While I wouldn’t go as far as saying Rise of the Beasts was the best one out and the greatest of them all, I would however say that I have a newfound hope for the film series.
That is all I can say without spoiling anything for you. If this still doesn’t remove your hesitations about watching the movie, I am telling you, gigantic robots beating each other up are such fun to watch on the big screen. Do not miss it.
