Review: "Sam Bahadur" attempts to capture the essence of a remarkable figure in the Indian Army through various pivotal moments but struggles to knit them together seamlessly. Vicky Kaushal's portrayal shines through, bringing authenticity to the character despite the film's disjointed narrative. The lack of heightened tension and depth in certain crucial moments, as well as the underdeveloped portrayal of female characters, are noted drawbacks that hinder the film's impact.
However, the film's charm lies in its unique flavor, such as Sam's interactions with different characters, his rapport with Indira Gandhi, and the initial scenes shaping his character arc. The synergy between Sam and Indira Gandhi, albeit depicted well, could have been further explored for added depth.
The standout element of the film is Vicky Kaushal's performance. Kaushal once again takes on the challenge of embodying a real-life character for the screen, and this time, he comes out with flying colours. His impeccable mannerisms, flawless diction, and the authoritative aura he exudes are hallmarks of a competent actor, and Vicky checks all the boxes. Mohd Zeeshan Ayub, essaying the role of General Yahya Khan, and Govind Namdeo, portraying Sardar Patel, are other noteworthy characters in the film who effectively make their presence felt.
The film attempts to encapsulate the essence of a decorated army officer but falls short of presenting a cohesive and engaging narrative. Vicky Kaushal's remarkable performance stands out, yet the film doesn't provide a holistic cinematic experience and offers enjoyment only in fragmented segments.
