Story/Premise
Gully boy is the story of Muraad (Ranveer),from Ghettos of Mumbai, aspires to become a Rapper. In this journey, he has to deal with Love, Family and Societal Stigma
Review
Set on the backdrop of Rap Hip-Hop, Gully Boy isn't a Conventional Bollywood film based on music. it totally targets the class divide in our society.
As we usually see in Musical Dramas, like the recent 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and Bollywood's very Own 'Rockstar', the protagonist is shown detached from the world and uses art as a distraction from his sufferings.Contrary to that notion, Gully boy is very grounded, it's raw and rustic. Though the Protagonist here is also suffering, he is using Rap to get out of the Hell-Hole and he is very clear about it. He isn't detached from reality, he wants to change reality to match his dreams.
Remember? This dialogues from Rockstar
toote huye dil se hi sangeet nikalta hai
Gully boy says
Gareebi se hi Asli Rap Nikalta hai
Gully Boy opens at a slow pace and continues to be so throughout. The dialogues aren't loud and cheesy, But natural as they should be. Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti's writing derails at some points, like the Kalki Koelchin episode, which was completely unnecessary, the conflict that it bought in with Alia's character resolves without any effort.
There are no real Antagonist in the movie, but in bits and pieces, opposition is shown by Vijay Raaz's character, father of Murad, and various characters, which are representations of Stigma, Stereotypes, and inequalities in our Society. Approval of these characters and amalgamations marks conclusion to the movie.
Gully Boy is a perfect treatment to this subject and never goes OTT at any point, which is quite different from the tone of movies that work in India. There are some delightful moments in the movie that keep us intrigued, But most of them are already in Trailer.
Coming to performances, all are extraordinary and makes you believe the character. Especially Ranveer, the nuances he expressed just amazes you. There are scenes in which there are no dialogues, he just nails those scenes with his expressions. Alia's mischievous portrayal is a delight to watch, but isn't long. Music is the backbone of the movie and cinematography is brilliant and all other technical departments have done a commendable job.
Verdict
Gully boy sheds some light upon the origin and purpose of Authentic Rap in india. But, focusses more on Personal Life of Murad than the Rap culture, in general. Despite, Movie chose to have a cliche ending, it is worth a watch for its Authenticity. Also, for the Music and Entertaining Performances.
