When the makers of Drishyam 2 announce the sequel of 2013 mega-blockbuster Drishyam everyone had a common question, WHY?
The story of Georgekutty and his struggle to protect his family was completed with its jaw-dropping climax. It's stupid to continue this and ruin the popularity of the prequel. But Jeetu Joseph's writing brilliance shattered all the negative questions among cine-goers. Drishyam 2 is one of the rare sequels which done it right and did justice to the prequel.
Drishyam 2 begins where it ended in the first part. It has been six years since Georgekutty (Mohanlal), Rani (Meena) and their kids were the prime suspects in the case of murdering Varun, son of Inspector Geetha Prabhakar (Asha Sharath). But, the village where Georgekutty lives, doesn’t want to let go of them. And neither do the police.
Geetha’s friend, who is the current IG investigating the case, deploys shadow police officers to get the truth out of Georgekutty and his family. But, Georgekutty is always prepared. How does he manage to escape from the police officers this time forms the rest of the story?
Like the prequel Drishyam 2 also begins with a family drama, the exposition of the scenario and new characters go long for one hour. At this point, the film can be a little stretched but it was all done intentionally to give a mindboggling second half.
George, Rani and their two daughters are still going through the trauma of dealing with police brutality and the murder of Varun. Every time a police vehicle crosses their house, it rattles them. Even though Varun deserves to be punished, Georgekutty and family live a punished life for murdering him.
The complexity in their lives and the constant fear they live in are shown perfectly well in the initial set of sequences. The story also moves forward Georgekutty, who owned a cable TV service in the first part, is now a theatre owner. His passion for films has pushed him to work on a script that he’d produce.
In one of the interview, Mohanlal said that even he doesn't know what Georgekutty is. is he a good guy or bad guy. That's the complexity of George Kutty. As he said in the pre-climax of Drishyam Georgekutty said that he can go to any extent to protect his family. Georgekutty is complex, cunning and a calculative man. All his actions have an intention which portrayed brilliantly by Mohanlal.
In new characters, Murali Gopy as the new police office in-charge outshines. Meena, Ansiba and Esther did their job very well.
Overall, if you patiently go through the first part of the film the second half will give you edge of the seat feel. The resumption of Georgekutty's lives will continue he has to go through difficulty of his life sue to his actions till he dies.
