Veteran Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh passed away on November 9, at his residence in Chennai at the age of 80.

Known for his versatility in the Tamil film industry, Ganesh appeared in over 400 films, leaving an indelible mark on audiences through diverse roles that ranged from comic and villainous characters to more tender, familial portrayals. His acting career, which spanned more than four decades, began with stage dramas in Delhi, where he served in a civilian role with the Indian Air Force. After moving to Chennai, he joined the drama troupe of noted actor Kathadi Ramamoorthy and eventually broke into cinema with K. Balachander’s film adaptation of Pattina Pravesam in 1977.

Ganesh’s impressive filmography includes memorable performances in Nayakan (1987), where he played a loyal servant to Kamal Haasan’s character Velu Naicker, as well as Michael Madana Kamarajan and Avvai Shanmughi. These roles, especially his portrayal of Palakkad Iyer in Michael Madana Kamarajan, have become iconic among fans of Tamil cinema. His contributions to the industry earned him numerous accolades, including Tamil Nadu’s prestigious Kalaimamani award and, more recently, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Nadigar Sangam.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and film stars including Rajinikanth and Vijay offered their condolences, recognizing his immense contribution to Tamil cinema. Ganesh’s family revealed that he had been battling age-related health issues and passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, honoring Ganesh’s extraordinary acting prowess. In his tweet, the Prime Minister wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of the illustrious film personality, Thiru Delhi Ganesh Ji. He was blessed with impeccable acting skills. He will be fondly remembered for the depth he brought to each role and for his ability to connect with viewers across generations. He was also passionate about theatre. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
