Maari 2 is the sequel to Dhanush's Tamil Maari (2016). The film is directed by Balaji Mohan. Dhanush and Sai Pallavi play the lead roles while Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas plays the role of the antagonist.
The second instalment to the 2015 flick Maari titled Maari 2 is packed with a lot of punch and this one was shown in the trailer itself. Sadly, the film doesn't live up to the expectations and it is quite underwhelming at the same time.
The movie begins with the introduction to Velu (Krishna) who is the son of a mighty don who is dead already and you get to see the backstory in the flashback when Maari (Dhanush) and Velu were best friends. The backstory also gives a glimpse when Velu was pulled into the drug business.
And a new challenge awaits in front of Maari in the form of Gangadhar Beeja (Tovino Thomas), a dangerous hardened criminal who wants to take revenge against Maari no matter what the cost.
Maari has a new ladylove in this movie in the form of Araathu Anandhi (Sai Pallavi), a streetsmart auto driver who has a soft corner for Maari throughout the film. She seems a little over-the-top but the director has made sure that she is not overused during the entire course of the film.
The director Balaji Mohan has incorporated all the important elements to make this masala movie a more perfect watch to check out in theatres. The best part about the film is the same magic which was present in the previous Maari which became quite popular with its savage punchlines.
The main highlight of the movie is the songs which attract everyone like a magnet, especially Rowdy Baby which grabs the intensity of the movie. The song is quite a chartbuster and the driving force of the movie as well.
The screenplay of the movie picks up well in the first half with moments like Dhanush's confrontation to his comical sidekicks Sanikkizhamai (Robo Shankar) and Kallori Vinoth (Adithangi) always by side. This is a treat to watch but the second half of the film seems to be quite slow and draggy which will bore you out.
Despite the new developments in the movie, most of the characters of the film seem to be bored out of it in this movie. Apart from that, we might not expect the same magic which is seen in the previous instalment of the film.
Overall, this film is a decent watch to enjoy on a festive weekend. And Dhanush's acting is the saving grace of the film.
