Chandramukhi 2 Movie Review: Manages To Maintain Interest Through Its Backstory And Music
Modified On: 29 September 2023 | Reviewed By: Team MoviekoopStoryline: The film begins with a wealthy family, the Chatterjees, who have roots in the ancient Vettaiyapuram palace, located in a remote village.
The Chatterjees learn about their ancestral temple's deteriorating condition and decide to renovate it and perform a grand puja to honor their family's traditions. But doing so might bring back the ghost of Chandramukhi, and let loose the cruel Vettaiyan, too.
Chandramukhi 2 Review: 'Chandramukhi 2' attempts to revisit the success of its predecessor from 2005, but it faces challenges due to the evolution of the horror-comedy genre in Tamil cinema. Now, 17 years later, horror comedy as a genre has almost reached its saturation point. This sequel is led by Raghava Lawrence, who built his stardom with another horror comedy franchise - the Kanchana films.
The film starts with a more traditional approach, reminiscent of the early 2000s. It features a hero-introduction fight and song, which are less common in contemporary cinema. The comedy in the movie is less effective, with Vadivelu's humor falling flat.
"Chandramukhi 2" is noted for abandoning some of the progressive elements of the original film, which was an adaptation of "Manichitrathazhu." The psychological aspect of the ghost is apparently replaced with more traditional supernatural elements like "aatma" and "deiva shakti."The characters in the film are archetypes, lacking depth and complexity. Even a seasoned actress like Radikaa Sarathkumar is seen as not making a significant impact due to weak character writing.
The highlight is that the film manages to maintain interest due to the smart expansion of the backstory of Vettaiyan and Chandramukhi. These portions, set in the second half of the film, build on the established legend from the first movie and contribute to its appeal.
The music by Keeravani is capturing the spirit of Vidyasagar's work in the original film. Kangana Ranaut and Raghava Lawrence manage to hold our attention with their screen presence, though they may not match up to Rajinikanth.
The film may appeal differently to viewers depending on their expectations. Those seeking a light diversion may find it passable, while those expecting something more substantial might feel underwhelmed.
In summary, "Chandramukhi 2" is a film that attempts to revisit the charm of the original but faces challenges in a genre that has evolved over the years. It manages to maintain interest through its backstory and music but falls short in terms of comedy and character development compared to the first installment. Viewer enjoyment may vary based on individual expectations and preferences.
