The Punjamon Illam, a 200-year-old Namboodiri homestead located in Kottayam, has taken a significant step by approaching the Kerala High Court to request the withdrawal of the censor certificate granted to the highly anticipated Mammootty-starrer film 'Bramayugam'.

The move comes just days before the horror thriller's theatrical release, set in the late 18th century.

According to reports from On Manorama, the family alleges that their family name and title are depicted negatively in the film. Specifically, they take issue with the character 'Kunjamon Potti' or 'Punjamon Potti', portrayed by Mammootty, who is depicted as practicing dark magic in the movie. The family believes that the character's name and portrayal are directly linked to their own family name and title, potentially harming their reputation.

The petition filed by the Punjamon Illam highlights the historical significance of their family, as documented in the renowned book 'Aithihyamala' by Kottarathil Sankunni. It argues that the film's portrayal is based on their family's story mentioned in the book and expresses concern that the negative depiction may tarnish their image in society.

Furthermore, the family asserts that neither the director nor any other individuals associated with the film have made an effort to communicate or explain the portrayal to them. Given the prominence of Mammootty in the film, the family is concerned about the potential impact it may have on the audience and seeks legal intervention to address their grievances.

The Kerala High Court has responded to the plea by issuing notices to the concerned parties, signaling the beginning of a legal battle over the portrayal of the Punjamon Illam in 'Bramayugam'. Meanwhile, the film is scheduled to release on February 15, setting the stage for an intriguing intersection of art and legal action.
