He is the iconic actor in the Kannada film industry who is filled with multiple talents ranging from singing, acting and playing musical instruments. The actor has managed to gather a fanbase with his immense portrayal of various characters in different films.

Vishnuvardhan was born as Sampath Kumar on 18th September 1950 in Mysore, Karnataka to HL Narayana Rao and Kamakshamma. His father had a huge collection of musical instruments with him. He is among the seven children of his parents. He made his debut in 1972 film Vamshavruksha which was directed by the veteran theatre personality Girish Karnad, in the film he had an important role in the film. The next film Naagarahavu where he was playing a lead role for the first time was a superhit at the box office and the film ran for 100 days in various theatres in Bangalore. The film was re-released this year as a tribute to the cult classic.

His death was one of the shocking deaths in the history of Sandalwood just three years after Dr. Rajkumar's death. He had a grandest funeral with full state honours and the fans performed his last rites in their special fan temple which is present in Abhimaan Studios. The temple was inaugurated on 30th March 2010.

His last role before his sudden demise was in Aptharakshaka which was the sequel to 2004 hit Apthamitra, the film opened to positive reviews at the time of the release and most of the fans had thronged at the theatres when the film released as it was just two months after his demise.
