Released last September, Kantara became a huge hit across India, initially taking off in its original Kannada-language version, then snowballing when versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam were also released. Produced on a budget of Rs160m (US$2m), the film went on to gross Rs3.97bn (US$48.8m) in India and overseas.
Now the news about 'Kantara 2' has been confirmed and the second part is getting ready to go on floors soon.
Though there is no news on what could be the storyline for the prequel, the speculation is that Rishab Shetty will be exploring the relationship between the villagers, the deity and the troubled king. The king had made a pact with the deity to protect the villagers and the land around him, but things turned out otherwise. This man versus nature battle is the crux of the film.
The makers will start the shooting in June which is a perfect time as the story demands a rainy season and the film is being planned to release next summer around April or May 2024. Rishab Shetty and his team have gone to scout for the locations in the coastal regions of Karnataka and will be spending more than 2 months to understand the local folklore which was featured in 'Kantara'.
Rishab Shetty is currently scripting the highly-anticipated Kannada-language feature, part of an ambitious slate across four South Indian languages announced by Hombale Films, which recently pledged to invest Rs30bn (U.S.$370m) in films and series over the next five years. Shetty will again star in and direct the film.
