Internet Criticizes FFI as Laapataa Ladies Misses Oscars 2025 Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the Oscars 2025 shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category on Tuesday. Notably absent was India’s official entry, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao.
The omission has sparked frustration among film enthusiasts online, with many blaming the Film Federation of India (FFI) for the country’s repeated failures in securing an Oscars nod.
Social media users questioned the selection process, arguing that Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light, a Cannes Grand Prize winner, would have been a stronger contender. “FFI snubbed AWIAL, destroying our chances to be on the list,” wrote one user on X, adding that the selection body needs a revamp to prioritize films with better global appeal.
The uproar also highlighted the FFI’s dismal track record, with calls for structural reforms. Critics pointed out that Laapataa Ladies, though critically acclaimed, lacked the momentum for an effective Oscars campaign. Meanwhile, All We Imagine As Light has already secured nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.
While India’s entry faltered, there was a silver lining for Indian cinema as Sandhya Suri’s UK-based Hindi film Santosh made it to the shortlist, offering some consolation to disappointed fans.
