The trailer for Kangana Ranaut's directorial debut, Emergency, was unveiled today, August 14, at a grand event in Mumbai. The film is scheduled to premiere in theaters on September 6, 2024, with Kangana taking on the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Set against the backdrop of 1975 India during the Emergency period, Emergency explores one of the most tumultuous chapters in the nation's history through Kangana's portrayal of Indira Gandhi in a gripping political drama.

The film features a stellar cast, including Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and the late Satish Kaushik, who plays former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram.

The trailer reveals the early relationship between a young Indira Gandhi and her father, the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and follows her ascent in Indian politics. It emphasizes the wars, political strife, and numerous challenges she encountered, presenting her life as a modern-day ‘Shakespearean tragedy.’

Announced by Kangana in 2021, Emergency is described as a political drama rather than a biopic of Indira Gandhi. In addition to starring, Kangana has also taken on directing responsibilities for the film.

Backed by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, Emergency is a high-budget depiction of one of the most controversial periods in Indian history, focusing on the life of India’s first female Prime Minister. The film will hit theaters on September 6, 2024.
