Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency is cleared for release, contingent on "some cuts" recommended by the Censor Board of Film Certification's revision committee, the Bombay High Court was informed on Thursday.
Initially set to release on September 6, the film faced backlash due to allegations of historical inaccuracies and misrepresentation of the Sikh community. Based on the Emergency declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, government sources indicated that the film contains "sensitive content" that could potentially hurt "religious sentiments."
The High Court heard a petition from the film's co-producers, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, urging the release of the censor certificate to facilitate the film's screening. The court directed the CBFC to make a final decision, stating that it is not within the board’s jurisdiction to determine public order implications.
Justice BP Colabawalla noted that Ms. Ranaut's work is not a documentary and questioned the audience's perception of artistic representation. He emphasized that the CBFC must take a definitive stance on the film. Abhinav Chandrachud, representing the board, expressed concerns about some polarizing content. Ranaut, facing financial strain from the delay, mentioned the potential sale of her property linked to the film’s production.
