Emmy 2024: Shogun sweeps 18 awards, including Outstanding Drama series

This achievement marks the highest number of wins in the event’s history, a testament to the series’ compelling portrayal of 17th-century Japan.

Shogun faced fierce competition from other top-tier nominees, including The Crown, Fallout, The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, and 3 Body Problem. The show had garnered 25 nominations, and its historic success began at the Creative Arts Emmys, where it won 14 awards. On the main Emmy night, it added four more, including wins for lead actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.

In his acceptance speech, co-creator Justin Marks expressed deep gratitude for the support from FX executives, and Sanada shared heartfelt thanks to the crew and directors of Shogun and the long legacy of samurai period dramas. Marks humorously acknowledged the bold decision to produce a subtitled, expensive period piece with a climax revolving around a poetry competition.

The win was significant due to the strong contenders. The Crown concluded its sixth and final season with multiple nominations, including for Dominic West and Imelda Staunton. Fallout, based on the popular video game, captured audiences with its post-apocalyptic vision. The Gilded Age, The Morning Show, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Slow Horses were also celebrated for their storytelling and performances.

The 2024 Emmys returned with grandeur after delays caused by last year's strikes, highlighting a year of exceptional talent and remarkable storytelling, all broadcast live from the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
