The story begins in the suburbs of Dubai where Aby works in a company and lives with his wife, Priya. On a sudden hit of crisis, Aby is left off from his Job. In those scenes, Fahadh strikes a glamorous pose along with Jinu Joseph as George. As the wife Priya moves to live in a new village, unfamiliar and an air new to their lungs. It is with great stress and ambiguity that the couple move into their new household around new and somewhat strange vibed people. For sure it is only with a certain degree of difficulty a new couple can gel with the new surroundings and neighbours. Varathan is a Malayalam Action movie, which has been directed by Amal Neerad. The movie stars Fahadh Fazil & Mayanadhi fame Aishwarya Lekshmi in the lead roles. Music is composed by Sushin Shyam. Littil Swayamp has handled the cinematography while Vivek Harshan has done the editing.

Fahadh Faasil's made a habit of making his fans wait for his films. It's been almost nine months since his last release Carbon. One thing that fans can be assured of though is that he never repeats himself and for Varathan as well the actor has taken on a completely new avatar for his character that goes through varying emotions, but with a stoic calm in the first half only to unleash a storm later. Varathan is an instructive example of how a filmmaker may achieve feminist brilliance by largely yet not entirely understanding women's concerns and then allow his narrative to spiral downwards into patriarchal clichés because, well, he does not entirely understand women's concerns. I am willing myself to believe that lack of comprehension is the reason for the unravelling of Varathan, and that Amal Neerad is not just another one of those contemporary directors who woke up one morning and said, "Hmmm, women's rights sell these days so let's give it a shot." Just the presence of characters played by Sharaf U Dheen, Arjun Ashokan and Vijilesh Karayad near the compound of Priya's house, sends a chill down our spines. Aishwarya and Fahadh are in top form in this thriller. Read full review

Abi (Fahadh Faasil) and his wife Priya (Aishwarya Lekshmi) decide to shift to Kerala when he loses his job in Dubai. They plan to take a vacation at Priya's ancestral property in the western ghats. The locals at the place are not that fond of outsiders as there have been many dark stories in the past involving outsiders. Priya knows that most of the men in the village are perverts and misogynists as she did her schooling there. Abi is a good-hearted gentleman who refrains from jumping to conclusions. But when Abi, a varathan (outsider) decides to go bazooka on them, the movie bombards from first gear into fifth gear. Read full review
