Peranbu, also titled Resurrection, is a bilingual (Tamil & Malayalam) drama film written and directed by Ram and produced by P. L. Thenappan. The film features Mammootty, Tamil actress Anjali and Thanga Meenkal fame Sadhana in the lead roles. Featuring music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja, the film began production in early 2016. The film also introduced Anjali Ameer, a transsexual woman from Kerala. The songs will be written by lyricist and poet Vairamuthu.

Ram’s Peranbu is divided into multiple chapters, with each one alternately describing nature in the most glowing or loathing terms — Iyarkkai Athisayamaanathu, Iyarkkai Kodooramanathu, Iyarkkai Arputhamaanathu, Iyarkkai Aabathaanathu and so on. But that is how the life of the film’s protagonist, Amudhavan (Mammootty) is; for a while, his troubles seem to vanish only to reappear soon. Ram beautifully encapsulates this idea visually, by repeatedly us giving us shots of mist enveloping or lifting off from the lake by which Amudhavan resides during the first half of the film. A few minutes into Peranbu, you realise there is much more to the story of a single father Amudhavan (Mammootty), whose whole world is his daughter Paapa (Sadhana). Paapa isn’t your normal teenager. She has cerebral palsy, and is, in fact, too afraid to even let her father close. Ram, as a director, has an easy way of slipping in the details and takes you through the emotions of each character step by step. Read full review

Tamil cinema has had its share of father-daughter based films with Ajith’s Viswasam being the latest offering. However, it’s going to be extremely difficult to find a film as affecting as well disturbing in this space as Mammootty starrer Peranbu, and all credit goes to its director Ram for taking a road less travelled and giving us a film for years to remember and celebrate. In what can be described as a departure from his style of filmmaking, Peranbu is Ram’s quietest and most meditative and most rewarding film in years and it is going to be really tough to replace it.
