Zootopia 2 movie Review: Familiar Charm in a Pleasant, Polished Return

Zootopia 2 brings back the winning duo of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, and with them, the warmth, wit, and visual brilliance that made the original such a hit. Their partnership, once again viewed with suspicion by their own department, lands them in a tricky case involving Gary De’Snake — a reptile treated as an outsider in a city proudly built “by mammals, for mammals.”

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the sequel wisely avoids world-ending stakes. Instead, it leans into mystery and emotional drama, unfolding like a character-driven investigation rather than a conventional animated adventure. This grounded approach gives the film a mature tone, making it feel less like a children’s fantasy and more like a reflective social allegory.

Ginnifer Goodwin remains delightful as the endlessly optimistic Judy, while Jason Bateman’s Nick continues to charm with his laid-back cynicism. Their chemistry is still the film’s strongest asset. Ke Huy Quan’s Gary De’Snake is instantly endearing — vulnerable, misunderstood, and central to the film’s emotional core.

While the animation is lush and the humour lands through clever animal-world wordplay, the film rarely pushes beyond its comfort zone. The music is serviceable, though Shakira’s new track feels familiar to the point of déjà vu. Despite a solid premise and strong writing, Zootopia 2 lacks the spark and surprise that made the first film feel revolutionary.
