The Rise of Ashoka Movie Storyline: Set in the 1970s, The Rise of Ashoka follows a young graduate who returns to his village and rises against oppression, untouchability, and injustice practiced through the temple hair trade controlled by a local tyrant.
Review: The soul of the film echoes Kuvempu’s philosophy from Malegalalli Madumagalu — “Here, no one is important and no one is unimportant.” Much like recent films centered on social oppression, this too revolves around dominance, discrimination, and resistance.
In the village of Avaratti, a Tamil-origin businessman, Kuttibabji (Sampath), controls the lucrative temple hair offering trade. Working under him for meager wages is barber Ganganna (B. Suresh), who dreams of seeing his son Ashoka (Satish Ninasam) secure a government job instead of continuing the family profession. After completing his degree and returning home, Ashoka becomes aware of the oppression faced by his community. Alongside his love for Ambika (Sapthami Gowda), he steps onto the path of rebellion.
The first half effectively portrays rural life, the emotional bond between father and son, village festivities, and the antagonist’s dominance. However, the screenplay weakens in the second half. While the story could have explored constitutional and lawful means of reform, it instead leans toward anger and retaliation. Though the film references the Constitution, it paradoxically shows the protagonist taking the law into his own hands.
Performance-wise, B. Suresh stands out as the father. Satish Ninasam, Sapthami Gowda, and Sampath do justice to their roles. The song “Yelo Madeva” is impressive, though the action sequences feel artificial. Overall, The Rise of Ashoka presents a predictable, formula-driven revolutionary drama.
