Plot:

The narrative unfolds in the lush Malnad region, where Swamy alias Rippan Swamy (Vijay Raghavendra) owns an estate. Outwardly a wealthy estate owner, he rules over a gang of estate workers, including Prakash Thuminad, who follow him more out of fear than respect. What binds them together is fear and loyalty — until they slowly begin to realize they are treated less like comrades and more like slaves. Swamy’s violent temperament, reflected in his disturbing tendency to consume raw meat, sets the tone for his menacing personality.

The story takes a gripping turn when Santosh (Santosh Shetty), one of Swamy’s trusted men, suddenly goes missing. His mother Sharadha(Yamuna Shrinidhi), a former estate worker, raises a police complaint, setting off an investigation led by a newly appointed inspector in a town otherwise untouched by crime. What begins as a missing person’s case gradually unravels into a sinister web of cover-ups, with past murders resurfacing — incidents that were previously dismissed as mere accidents. As the investigation deepens, the film pivots into a tale of karmic retribution, questioning whether Rippan Swamy’s reign of terror will finally meet its end.

Performances

This film marks a significant departure for Vijay Raghavendra. Known for his clean-cut roles, he embraces a menacing, morally ambiguous protagonist for the first time. His portrayal of Rippan Swamy is convincing — his raw aggression, physicality, and psychological depth bring authenticity to the role. It is refreshing to see an actor of his stature break stereotypes and embody a character steeped in shades of grey.

Ashwini Chandra Shekhar, playing Mangala, Swamy’s wife, lends emotional weight to the story. Her character arc — a woman with dreams of becoming a doctor but constrained by marriage — is understated yet symbolic, mirroring the suppressed realities of many women in rural settings.

Prakash Thuminad and his team add lighter moments through comedy, which balances the intensity of the thriller, though at times the tonal shift feels slightly uneven.

Direction & Screenplay

Kishore Moodbidri delivers a narrative that stays true to local culture while also working as a gripping mainstream thriller. His use of the Mangalore Kannada dialect adds authenticity, and the inclusion of folk elements like Yakshagana and Shardula enriches the cultural backdrop of the film.

The screenplay holds the audience’s attention with consistent suspense, though it tends to spotlight the protagonist’s dominance more than the details of the police investigation. This choice makes the crime-solving appear more straightforward, but it also keeps the focus firmly on the central character. The opening action sequence, while impactful, could have been slightly tighter for greater effect.

Music & Technical Aspects

Samuel Aby has composed the music, which blends seamlessly with the rustic setting. The raw, earthy score complements the darker shades of the film, while the visuals capture the rugged beauty of the Malnad region effectively. Cinematography by Ranganath C M highlights both the scenic charm and the lurking menace of the estate, creating a fitting backdrop for the story.

Verdict

Rippan Swamy stands out as an engaging thriller that blends cultural richness with compelling performances. At its core is Vijay Raghavendra, who shines in a bold and refreshing transformation, bringing intensity and conviction to a character shaded with darkness.

For audiences who enjoy dark suspense thrillers rooted in regional authenticity, this film is worth a watch. It also carries an important underlying message: no matter how powerful one may seem, karma eventually catches up.
