KD: The Devil Movie Review: A Grand Cinematic Ride Packed With Power, Style, And A Promise Of More

KD: The Devil, starring Dhruva Sarja and directed by Prem, arrives with massive expectations, controversy, and the promise of a larger cinematic universe. Mounted on a grand scale with an ensemble cast, the film clearly positions itself as the first chapter of an ongoing story, ending on a deliberate cliffhanger.

Storyline:

Set against a retro 1980s backdrop, the narrative opens with a string of murders tied to a symbolic machete before shifting focus to the world of wrestling and underworld dominance led by Daak Deva, played by Sanjay Dutt. At the centre is Kali, portrayed by Dhruva Sarja, whose journey from admiration to confrontation unfolds alongside personal and political tensions involving Dharma (Ramesh Aravind) and Annayappa (V. Ravichandran).

The first half leans heavily on world-building, often stretching scenes and repeating ideas, which slows the narrative. The film gains momentum in the second half, where the conflict intensifies and the storytelling shifts towards high drama and spectacle, culminating in a tense but unresolved climax.

Dhruva Sarja delivers a performance that balances innocence and intensity, fitting well within Prem’s mass-hero template. Ramesh Aravind offers a restrained and grounded contrast, while Sanjay Dutt brings a commanding presence as the antagonist. Shilpa Shetty adds intrigue with a character that hints at future developments. Supporting performances from Ravishankar, Suchendra Prasad, Dattanna, and Manasi Sudhir add depth, while Sudeep’s cameo as Kaala Bhairava stands out despite limited screen time, teasing a larger role ahead.

Technically, the film showcases ambition. Production designer Mohan B Kere effectively recreates vintage Bengaluru, while cinematographer William David captures scale and action with visual flair, particularly in the latter half. However, Arjun Janya’s score, though functional, lacks the standout impact expected, and the absence of the much-talked-about “Seraga Sarase” song is noticeable.

Overall, KD: The Devil offers a mixed experience, ambitious in scale and intent, but uneven in execution. While the latter half delivers glimpses of gripping drama, the film ultimately feels like a setup, ending on a high-stakes cliffhanger that builds anticipation for its sequel, KD: The Devil’s Kingdom.
