Kaantha – Movie Storyline: Set in the 1950s, Kaantha follows the turbulent clash between a legendary director, Ayya (Samuthirakani), and his rebellious protégé and superstar KT Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan). When Mahadevan takes creative control of their new film and renames it Kaantha, egos ignite, and their shared muse Kumari (Bhagyashri Borse), a Burmese refugee, becomes the center of conflict. As ambition, betrayal, and passion spiral out of control, Inspector Devaraj (Rana Daggubati) steps in to unravel the truth behind a shocking tragedy on set.

Review: Cinema about cinema often risks becoming self-indulgent, but Kaantha elegantly sidesteps that pitfall. Director Selvamani Selvaraj turns a 1950s film set into an arena of power, ego, and moral decay. What begins as a creative clash between a legendary filmmaker and his rebellious protégé soon spirals into a battle for control, both professional and emotional.

Dulquer Salmaan plays KT Mahadevan, a rising star who challenges the authority of his mentor, Ayya (Samuthirakani), by reshaping their joint project to fit his image. In the middle stands Kumari (Bhagyashri Borse), a refugee-turned-actress whose affection becomes the weapon both men use against each other. Their volatile relationship — a blend of affection, manipulation, and ambition — fuels the film’s emotional and psychological charge.

Selvamani’s storytelling thrives on ambiguity — you can never fully tell if Mahadevan’s emotions are genuine or calculated performance. The director embraces the theatricality of the era with desaturated tones, period-accurate set design, and dialogue that mirrors the grandiosity of 1950s cinema. The entry of Inspector Devaraj (Rana Daggubati) midway turns the movie set into an interrogation stage, adding pulpy tension and theatrical spectacle.

Performance-wise, Dulquer delivers a nuanced portrayal of a star who knows the power of his own charm yet teeters on moral collapse. Samuthirakani brings depth to the wounded mentor role, while Bhagyashri Borse impresses with vulnerability and quiet strength. Rana Daggubati is gloriously over-the-top in his flamboyant cop act — a perfect fit for the film’s operatic tone.

Though Kaantha occasionally falters with predictable twists and an overlong runtime, its craftsmanship never wavers. Jakes Bejoy’s haunting score and Anthony’s crisp editing ensure that the drama remains gripping. It’s less a film about filmmaking and more a story about human vanity — told with conviction, artistry, and emotional heft.

Verdict: A richly staged drama where cinema, ego, and artistry combust beautifully.
