Heads Of State Movie Review: Diplomats, Danger, and Deadly Games: Elba & Cena Deliver Fireworks in This Action-Comedy Riot

Storyline: UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) and US President Will Derringer (John Cena)—public rivals with clashing personalities—are forced to team up when Air Force One is shot down mid-air. Stranded and hunted, they must navigate enemy territory and stop a looming global threat. With help from MI6 agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), the duo uncovers a deadly conspiracy led by a vengeful mobster Viktor Gradov (Paddy Considine). Heads Of State Movie Review: In Enemies of the State, Idris Elba plays the uptight and stoic British Prime Minister Sam Clarke, while John Cena brings his signature swagger as Will Derringer, a larger-than-life American President with a movie-star past. Their very public rivalry takes a deadly turn when Air Force One is shot down mid-flight, forcing the two leaders to survive on the run, hunted across borders. With the help of MI6 operative Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), they race to unravel a global conspiracy before catastrophe strikes.

Director Ilya Naishuller crafts an adrenaline-charged action comedy that never takes itself too seriously, yet never skimps on stakes either. The film thrives on the mismatched chemistry between Elba and Cena—one a buttoned-up ex-military man, the other an ego-driven showman. Their banter is relentless and razor-sharp, grounding the action in constant, crowd-pleasing humour.

Behind the gags, there's a smartly layered plot. Writers Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec, and Harrison Query anchor the laughs with a compelling geopolitical thriller. The villain—Paddy Considine’s Viktor Gradov—is a cold, calculating Russian mobster out for revenge, bringing real menace to the spectacle. Meanwhile, Priyanka Chopra Jonas adds finesse as the slick MI6 agent who is equal parts brains, brawn, and deadpan humour, making her presence felt in every scene, whether throwing punches or cracking dry jokes.

The action is non-stop—from mid-air brawls aboard a doomed Air Force One to train-top duels and chaotic street fights. Even a bizarre encounter with punk teens in Poland becomes a highlight. Cinematically, it’s a blast. Visually dynamic and tightly paced, the film gives every set piece a pulse, and the momentum never flags.

Jack Quaid provides comic contrast as the anxious but well-meaning agent Marty Comer, adding another flavour to this already well-seasoned cast. With punchy dialogue, perfectly timed laughs, and action that rarely lets you breathe, this is blockbuster diplomacy gone delightfully rogue.

Slick, self-aware, and shamelessly fun, Heads of  State is the kind of high-octane buddy flick that fires on all cylinders—explosions, egos, and all.
