Review: Dominic and the Ladies Purse is, in many ways, a Mammootty one-man show—and that's a good thing. While it departs from the typical style of a Gautham Vasudev Menon film, it still carries a distinct narrative flair and a charm in its seemingly trivial details that enhance the storytelling.
As an investigative drama, the film keeps the audience intrigued for a while, though the first half leans more toward lighthearted moments and leisurely progress in the investigation. There's plenty to unravel, with subtle humor woven into the narrative, making the journey engaging. Neeraj and Sooraj Rajan, along with Gautham, have crafted a compelling mystery, though trimming some portions could have elevated the excitement.
Dominic, while not as iconic as Mammootty's Pranchiyettan or Rajamanikyam, is still a memorable character brought to life with his signature style. This character isn’t without his quirks—he's boastful, funny, practical, and a little lonely. Mammootty's portrayal is filled with "Mammootty mannerisms," making Dominic unapologetically himself.
The plot itself is intriguing, though in the second half, the audience might start piecing together the culprit's identity. The script cleverly ties even minor comments to the larger mystery, showcasing strong writing. While there are some inaccuracies in the portrayal of local news broadcasts, it doesn’t detract from the overall experience. The dialogues are quirky and relatable, adding to the film’s charm.
The film is layered, as are its characters. Gokul Suresh and Viji Venkatesh complement Mammootty’s performance perfectly, like satellites orbiting around the star. However, the standout after Mammootty is Sushmitha Bhatt, who delivers a spectacular performance. Despite the numerous characters weaving in and out of the story, they feel justified within the plot's context.
The climax is thrilling and compensates for any moments of sluggishness earlier in the film. The narrative also touches on themes like identity without judgment, presenting them fairly and encouraging viewers to view them through a non-discriminatory lens.
Darbuka Siva’s music adds a fresh energy to the film, with standout tracks like the peppy number sung by Vijay Yesudas, accompanied by ThirumaLi, Sathyaprakash, and Pavithra Chari.
In the end, Dominic and the Ladies Purse stands out as a compelling, layered investigation drama, elevated by Mammootty's magnetic presence and solid supporting performances.
