Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava is a historical war drama chronicling the life and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (Vicky Kaushal), the valiant second ruler of the Maratha Empire. Chhaava Movie Review:

From the very first frame, Chhaava immerses the audience in a world of grandeur and war. The battle sequences are some of the most well-choreographed in Indian cinema, delivering an adrenaline-pumping experience. Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj is nothing short of phenomenal. He embodies the warrior’s ferocity, resilience, and unwavering dedication to Swaraj, making every scene pulse with raw intensity. Whether in intense battle sequences, emotionally charged confrontations, or moments of quiet determination, Vicky delivers what could easily be his most powerful performance to date.His final confrontation with Akshaye Khanna is particularly spellbinding.

Akshaye Khanna, as Aurangzeb, is chilling. His portrayal is layered, exuding arrogance, menace, and quiet rage. Even in silence, his piercing gaze speaks volumes. His character’s evolution, from being a dominant force to a desperate ruler consumed by Sambhaji’s defiance, adds gravitas to the story

Rashmika Mandanna, as Yesubai, brings grace and strength to her role, though her screen time is limited. Divya Dutta (Soyrabai), Diana Penty (Zeenat), and Viineet Kumar Singh (Kavi Kalash) deliver impactful performances, with Viineet’s dialogues in the climax drawing applause. Ashutosh Rana is excellent in his role, though one wishes he had more screen time.

The action sequences in Chhaava are meticulously choreographed, visceral, raw, and immersive—bringing history alive with grand set pieces. The large-scale battles are visually stunning, though some action sequences in the first half feel stretched. The production design, costumes, and cinematography transport viewers to the 17th century, making for an authentic and breathtaking experience.

A.R. Rahman’s music, while complementary to the film’s atmosphere, lacks a truly memorable track. However, the background score succeeds in amplifying the film’s intensity, especially during crucial battle moments.

However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The first half takes time to build momentum, occasionally struggling to establish an emotional connection. While the war sequences are visually impressive, they sometimes overshadow the deeper political and personal conflicts. A tighter screenplay and sharper editing could have enhanced the film’s impact.

Chhaava is a cinematic spectacle—an epic tribute to one of India’s bravest warriors. While the film stumbles with pacing issues and prolonged action, it soars in its second half, thanks to Vicky Kaushal’s career-best performance and an emotionally charged climax. Laxman Utekar successfully brings history to life, making it a must-watch for lovers of historical dramas and patriotic cinema.
