‘War 2’ Set for Independence Day Showdown: Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR Gear Up for Explosive Spy Thriller

The buzz around War 2 is reaching a fever pitch as the highly anticipated action extravaganza starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR locks in India’s Independence Day weekend for its global release. Slated to hit theatres on August 14, the film is positioned for a pan-Indian and international rollout across multiple languages.

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 is the sixth installment in Yash Raj Films’ ambitious Spy Universe and the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War. Hrithik Roshan returns as Major Kabir Dhaliwal, RAW’s most elite operative, while Jr. NTR makes his grand Bollywood debut in a menacing antagonist role.

According to Gulte, YRF has opted to self-distribute the film across all territories—including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, the rest of South India, North India, and overseas—despite strong interest from leading Telugu production houses. This bold move reflects the studio’s immense confidence in War 2's cross-regional and global appeal.

Production is nearly wrapped, with one major schedule remaining—a high-voltage dance-off between Hrithik and Jr. NTR. The shoot was temporarily delayed due to a knee injury sustained by Hrithik during rehearsals but is now back on track and expected to conclude soon, paving the way for post-production.

The teaser, unveiled on Jr. NTR’s birthday, set social media ablaze with glimpses of stylized action, intense combat, and a brooding, more ruthless Kabir. Audiences were treated to glimpses of sword fights, gritty brawls, and high-octane chases, teasing the film’s promise of spectacle and emotion.

However, War 2 won’t have the weekend to itself. The film is set to face fierce competition at the box office from Coolie, Rajinikanth’s action-packed venture directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which is also eyeing an August 14 release.
