Vijay Deverakonda's psychological thriller Kingdom released worldwide on July 31 to positive reviews and a controversy. A scene portraying Jaffna Tamils negatively triggered criticism, but netizens rallied behind the film, calling it fictional and well-performed.

The much-anticipated psychological thriller Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda and directed by Gautham Thinnanuri, opened in cinemas worldwide on July 31. The film has been praised for its compelling plot twists, Anirudh Ravichander’s impactful score, and Vijay’s intense performance. Featuring Bhagyashri Borse, Satyadev, and others in key roles, Kingdom blends suspense with emotional drama.

However, the film courted controversy on its opening day. YouTube reviewer and actor Prashanth posted on X (formerly Twitter), criticizing the depiction of Jaffna Tamils in the film. "#Kingdom interval—the movie has portrayed Jaffna Tamils as evil people who oppressed Indians who migrated to Sri Lanka. Why do this, @TheDeverakonda?" he asked, questioning the film’s motives, especially since promotions were carried out in Tamil Nadu.

While Prashanth’s comments ignited online discussions, the backlash didn’t gain widespread traction. Netizens came forward in defense of the film, pointing out that Kingdom opens with a clear disclaimer stating that it is set in a fictional world. “It’s just a movie. If the villain had your name, would you take that personally too?” one user quipped.

Despite the controversy, Kingdom is off to a strong start. With screenings in multiple languages including Tamil and Telugu, early box office estimates suggest an opening day collection of over ₹30 crore. Industry insiders project the film could cross ₹100 crore within its first week.

Whether or not the controversy grows further remains to be seen. For now, Kingdom stands tall, both at the box office and in the hearts of its fans.
