Mahesh Babu recalls shooting Varanasi in Africa with wild animals; SS Rajamouli’s film releases April 7, 2027.
Mahesh Babu recently opened up about his experience filming Varanasi, his first collaboration with director S. S. Rajamouli. The globetrotting action-adventure, which also stars Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is slated for release on April 7, 2027.
The team recently wrapped a major schedule in Kenya’s Maasai Mara, shooting amidst real wildlife. Recalling the experience in an interview with Discussing Film, Mahesh said it was unforgettable — and slightly nerve-wracking.
“It was something I will never forget. The first day of shooting in Africa, right in the middle of these animals, we had to get down from the vehicles and walk. I usually lead from the front, but that day I was a bit hesitant,” he shared. Hearing Rajamouli’s voice over the walkie-talkie asking Priyanka to walk ahead made him quietly relieved.
“It was a bit intimidating with all those wild animals, but after 5 or 10 minutes, you wouldn’t see the cameras or anyone. It was just us in the middle of the wildlands,” he added.
In the film, Mahesh Babu plays Rudhra, with Priyanka portraying Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran stepping in as the antagonist, Kumbha. Earlier, Rajamouli described Varanasi as being in the vein of adventurous franchises like Indiana Jones and James Bond, promising a grand cinematic spectacle.
The actor has also reportedly undergone extensive preparation for the role, including training in Kalaripayattu for nearly a year to bring authenticity to his character.
With its ambitious scale, international locations, and powerhouse cast, Varanasi is shaping up to be one of Indian cinema’s most awaited releases of 2027.
