Vijay’s Jana Nayagan faces a release setback due to censor delays, prompting legal action, overseas show cancellations, and refunds ahead of a rescheduled release.
Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s much-anticipated final film before stepping into active politics, has run into last-minute trouble ahead of its planned theatrical release. The film, which was expected to hit screens on Friday, failed to secure a censorship certificate even until Tuesday, triggering uncertainty around its release.
In response, producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court. After hearing arguments from both the film’s makers and the CBFC, Justice PT Asha stated that a verdict on the matter would be delivered on Friday.
Meanwhile, reports emerged on Wednesday of overseas distributors pulling down scheduled shows. Malik Streams Corporation, the Malaysian distributor, officially confirmed that Jana Nayagan will not release on January 9, 2026, as originally planned. In a social media statement, the distributor cited “unforeseen circumstances” and said further updates are awaited from the production team.
A source close to the production revealed that ticket refunds have been initiated for all advance bookings, including overseas sales, with the USA recording the highest number of pre-booked tickets. Despite clearing censorship in some international territories, the makers have decided to hold back the release until the film is cleared in India, as they are aiming for a simultaneous worldwide theatrical release.
