In Kaantha, Dulquer Salmaan breaks free from his charming hero image to portray a layered, emotionally intense role. Set against the backdrop of an old film industry, the Tamil-Telugu bilingual explores a strained father-son bond and ego clashes between a director and his superstar son.
Dulquer Salmaan is set to break free from his “heartthrob” image and dive into a far more complex and layered character in the much-anticipated bilingual film Kaantha. Marking a significant shift in his acting trajectory, Dulquer plays a role that challenges moral boundaries and explores grey shades of human emotion and ego.
Unveiled on Dulquer’s 42nd birthday, the official teaser of Kaantha gives audiences a haunting yet intriguing glimpse into its world. The film centers on the fractured relationship between a father, a seasoned director played by Samuthirakani, and his son, an actor-turned-superstar portrayed by Dulquer. Set in the backdrop of a bygone era in the South Indian film industry, Kaantha reflects the struggles, aspirations, and the fragile nature of artistic relationships.
The teaser opens with the fictional Modern Studios announcing a new project titled Saantha, touted as the first Tamil horror film. As pre-production begins, Samuthirakani throws himself into the creative process, while Dulquer—who plays the lead—enters with star power and unspoken baggage. It soon becomes clear that the once-inseparable father and son have fallen apart, and the growing production tensions only deepen their emotional rift. The conflict between creative vision and personal pride takes center stage.
Written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, Kaantha promises an immersive cinematic experience. The film is produced by Rana Daggubati, Dulquer Salmaan, Prashanth Potluri, and Jom Varghese under Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films. Backed by evocative music from Jhanu Chanthar and striking visuals by cinematographer Dani Sanchez Lopez, the film also boasts sharp editing by Llewellyn Anthony Gonsalvez and rich art direction by Ramalingam.
Kaantha is slated for a global theatrical release on September 12, and fans can expect a haunting tale of fame, ego, and fractured relationships in the world behind the silver screen.
