After a major clash with the CBFC over its title and content, Suresh Gopi’s courtroom drama Janaki V vs State of Kerala will finally release on July 17. Initially facing 96 proposed cuts, the film has now been cleared with only two edits and a U/A certificate. Expectations are high for this emotional legal thriller.
Suresh Gopi’s much-awaited legal drama Janaki V vs State of Kerala is all set to hit theatres on July 17 after overcoming a significant conflict with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film found itself at the centre of a censorship storm when the board objected to its title—featuring the name “Janaki,” which is also associated with the Hindu goddess Sita—and proposed a staggering 96 cuts along with a title change.
Refusing to bow down, the filmmakers legally challenged the CBFC’s decision. Following the legal pushback, the board revised its stance and cleared the film with just two minor changes, granting it a U/A certificate.
The makers took to social media to confirm the new release date, unveiling a fresh poster with the caption: “Behind every delay… lies a truth worth fighting for. And in the end, that truth shall always prevail!” The post struck a chord with netizens, with comments like “Justice is being served” and “RISE from FIRE” flooding in.
Set against the backdrop of Kerala’s judicial system, Janaki V vs State of Kerala follows Janaki, a woman fighting for justice after a traumatic event. Her legal battle is taken up by a determined lawyer, played by Suresh Gopi, who makes a return to the courtroom genre after his acclaimed performance in Garudan.
With the censorship battle now behind it, the film’s July 17 release is one of the most anticipated in Malayalam cinema this month.
