Suriya plays a Karuppusamy incarnate in Karuppu, while RJ Balaji surprises as a ruthless villain in the gripping trailer.
The trailer of Karuppu, starring Suriya and directed by RJ Balaji, was finally unveiled on Sunday, shortly after the political spotlight shifted following Vijay’s swearing-in as Chief Minister. The makers strategically timed the release to maximise attention around Suriya’s highly anticipated 45th film.
While the teaser had hinted that Suriya’s character was connected to Karuppusamy, a revered deity from Tamil Nadu, the trailer confirms that he is, in fact, a divine incarnation sent in human form. Powerful dialogues strongly reinforce this supernatural angle. In one striking moment, Suriya declares, “You thought I disappeared and forgot who I am?” while another scene has him confronting the legal system with the line, “You said even God can’t change court procedures? Well, here I am.”
The film appears to draw thematic parallels with Mookuthi Amman, where a goddess descends to expose corruption and injustice. However, unlike the satirical religious backdrop of that film, Karuppu seems deeply rooted in courtroom battles and legal conflicts. A key frame in the trailer reveals that much of the story unfolds around the Seven Wells Family Court in Chennai.
One of the trailer’s biggest surprises is RJ Balaji himself, who takes on a serious antagonist role as Baby Kannan. Far removed from his usual comic persona, he appears intense and menacing throughout the promo. Fans also noticed a subtle personal detail — the villain’s car number plate reads “TN12 BK 2085,” seemingly referencing RJ Balaji’s initials and birth year, 1985.
With its blend of divinity, legal drama, and intense confrontations, Karuppu has already sparked major curiosity among audiences.
