Antony Perumbavoor Confirms L3: Azrael with Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran

Producer Antony Perumbavoor has officially confirmed that L3: Azrael, the third chapter in the Lucifer franchise starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is very much in the pipeline.

During an interaction with Mohanlal fans on X Spaces ahead of the release of Drishyam 3, Antony addressed speculation surrounding the franchise’s future. Responding to a fan query, he stated that Azrael “will happen 100 per cent,” adding that films of such scale and excitement are important for the industry and audiences alike. He, however, mentioned that the project would require some time before moving ahead, allowing things to settle first.

The confirmation comes amid ongoing conversations around L2: Empuraan, which released in 2025 with massive anticipation. While the film became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films ever, it also sparked debates online regarding controversies and comparisons with the first instalment, Lucifer.

Earlier, Prithviraj Sukumaran had also spoken about the future of the franchise during promotions for Pallichattambi starring Tovino Thomas. Addressing whether criticism around Empuraan affected plans for the trilogy’s conclusion, he said criticism would never discourage him from making films. He noted that despite mixed reactions, there remains strong audience excitement for the next chapter.

Prithviraj also acknowledged that scheduling is currently the biggest challenge. According to him, coordinating dates—especially with Mohanlal’s packed schedule—alongside his own acting and directing commitments, remains a major hurdle before the film can begin production.

Penned by Murali Gopy, the Lucifer franchise was envisioned as a trilogy from the beginning. Although the title L3: Azrael was revealed at the end of Empuraan, Antony Perumbavoor’s latest statement marks the first major official confirmation about the project’s future.
