SP Balasubrahmanyam and Lakshmi’s emotional drama Mithunam arrives in Kannada on June 5, honouring the late legend’s legacy.
The Kannada version of Mithunam, featuring legendary singer-actor SP Balasubrahmanyam alongside veteran actress Lakshmi, is set to release in theatres on June 5, a day after SPB’s birth anniversary.
Directed by Tanikella Bharani, the original Telugu film marked one of SP Balasubrahmanyam’s final acting performances and remains a cherished work in his filmography.
The Kannada adaptation has been spearheaded by Madhusoodhan Havaldar and Trivikram Joshi, with Sridevi Srinivas presenting the film. A recent teaser launch and preview screening held in Bengaluru brought together several guests, including actor and KFCC vice-president Sundar Raj, who fondly recalled memories of SPB.
Speaking about the adaptation, Madhusoodhan Havaldar revealed that the makers of the original film granted remake rights with the condition that SPB’s vocal essence be preserved in the Kannada version. He noted that dubbing artist Prabhakar was chosen because his voice closely resembled the late singer’s tone. He also mentioned that the film’s release had faced delays due to pending Animal Board permissions.
Trivikram Joshi described Mithunam as a heartfelt story about ageing parents coping with loneliness after their children move abroad, highlighting the emotional depth and universal relevance of the narrative.
