Rajkumar’s Musical Soul Celebrated Through Nadayogi Dr Rajkumar

The rich musical legacy of legendary Kannada icon Dr Rajkumar was celebrated with the launch of Nadayogi Dr Rajkumar, a new bilingual book that explores the actor’s deep connection with music and Hindustani classical traditions. The book was unveiled by his daughter Poornima Rajkumar at a special event held at the Artists’ Association in Bengaluru.

Authored by R Manjunath Chavan and Dr Soumya Manjunath Chavan, the Kannada-English volume documents Rajkumar’s lifelong engagement with music, ranging from film songs and ghazals to his enduring curiosity for learning classical forms even in his later years.

Speaking at the launch, Poornima fondly remembered how deeply music shaped her father’s life, describing it as “his breath.” She noted that the authors, being closely associated with the family, were able to capture a lesser-known but significant aspect of the actor’s journey.

Adding an international touch to the occasion, members of the Kaveri Kannada Sangha from Tanzania attended the event. Organisers shared that the book would also reach Kannada-speaking communities in East Africa, extending Rajkumar’s cultural legacy beyond India.

Author R Manjunath Chavan reflected on his long association with Rajkumar since the 1992 film Jeevana Chaitra, describing the actor as someone with exceptional knowledge of both Carnatic and Hindustani music traditions.

The launch also carried symbolic significance, as Rajkumar’s debut film Bedara Kannappa was released on May 7, 1954, and the book arrived exactly 72 years later on May 7, 2026. The event was attended by notable personalities including Rockline Venkatesh and representatives from Lahari Music.
