Harivarasanam’s debut Maggi Pusthaka, a layered social drama on life and choices, releases Feb 13; third song unveiled.

Maggi Pusthaka, which translates to Mathematical Workbook, is written and directed by debutant Harivarasanam and promises a layered social drama reflecting on modern life and human choices. Produced under the Chinnaswamy Films banner by C Ethiraj and friends — with the director also backing the project — the film is now slated for release on February 13. The makers recently unveiled the film’s third song as part of its promotional campaign.

After spending nearly 17 years as an assistant director on more than 20 films, Harivarasanam makes his directorial debut with Maggi Pusthaka. He clarifies that despite its title, the film is not aimed at children. Instead, it serves as a metaphorical exploration of life. Drawing inspiration from a mathematics workbook, the title symbolises how life requires adding good values, subtracting negativity, multiplying knowledge, and dividing ignorance.

The story is adapted from Harivarasanam’s novel Avani, written during the COVID period. The narrative unfolds through a hyperlinked structure spanning four dimensions, eventually converging into a single emotional and philosophical climax.

Actor Raksha Gowda plays the role of a mother, describing it as one of the most challenging performances of her career. Krishna Mahesh appears in a negative role, with the film addressing the growing dependence on mobile phones and examining both their advantages and consequences.

Shot over 80 days across Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Nanjangud, Srirangapatna, and regions around HD Kote, the film boasts seven songs rendered by 17 singers. Music is composed by SS Nachappa, with noted composer M M Keeravani lending his voice to a special track alongside Rajesh Krishnan, Vijay Prakash, Naveen Sajju, and others.

Distributed by K Munindra under the MP Films banner, Maggi Pusthaka stars Ranjith Kasaragodu and Ranvee Shekhar in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Shobaraj, Meghana, Mysuru Ramanand, and others. Cinematography is handled by Nandakumar, while editing is by Shivakumar.

With its philosophical undertones and socially relevant themes, Maggi Pusthaka aims to offer audiences a thought-provoking cinematic experience when it hits theatres this Valentine’s weekend.
