Legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, known for his iconic patriotic films, passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai on Friday. He breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, reportedly due to heart-related complications, with “decompensated liver cirrhosis” as a secondary cause of death.

Fondly called ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his nationalistic cinema, Manoj Kumar was celebrated for films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), and Purab Aur Paschim (1970). His remarkable career also included classics such as Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, and Kranti.

Honored with the Padma Shri in 1992, Kumar was later awarded India’s highest film honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 2015 for his contributions to cinema. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his demise, sharing old pictures and a heartfelt message highlighting his influence in igniting national pride through films.

Born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami in present-day Pakistan, Kumar also ventured into filmmaking. In an interview, he recalled how he unintentionally became a director while working on Shaheed, and later made Upkar after being inspired by Lal Bahadur Shastri’s call of “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.”

Manoj Kumar’s cinematic legacy continues to inspire generations, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema and patriotism.
