If a small budget film becomes critically and commercially successful, other makers try to encash by making a remake. But they forget to understand the theme of the film and write a good screenplay. This is what happened in the case of Ujda Chaman. The makers had a beautiful script of the 2017 Kannada film Ondu Motteya Kathe but they ruined it with a weak and sloppy screenplay.

The story is the same as the original but the treatment is lazy and boring. In spite of understanding the fact that body-shaming is not cool and we should love ourselves and stop being self-pity. But here the half of the film shows misogyny and forcefully being crass.

The story revolves around Chaman (Sunny Leone) who is the 30-year-old bald guy who is sad about being losing hair and because of this he is unmarried. An astrologer played by Saurabh Shukla warns him that if he doesn't get married till 31 he will be unmarried till death and hunt for getting a love of his life begins.

The character Chaman is a Hindi professor and this trait is not used in the film comparing to the original. For example, there is a beautiful scene in the original where the protagonist writes a love letter in pure Kannada due to his love and knowledge towards his mother tongue, the remake doesn't have these kinds of brilliance.

Chaman meets a pus size girl Apsara through a Tinder match this is different from the original and it's quite good premise but that doesn't last an impression due to sloppy screenplay after that.

The Malayalam remake of Ondu Motteya Kathe, Thamasha which brilliantly showcased the topic of body shaming which is also different from the original but it never loses the essence of the original because it had brilliant writing.

The film's most irritating part is the horrible background score which is so loud that it makes difficult to hear the dialogues uttered by the actors.

Sunny Singh tried to act perfectly but somewhere he overdoes the role of being naive. Maanvi is sincere and justifies the role of Apsara. Saurabh Shukla despite having only two scenes gives a subtle performance. Grusha Kapoor and Atul Kumar play hapless parents with aplomb.

Finally, Ujda Chaman is a big example of how a beautiful script can be ruined because of weak writing. This could have been one of those rambunctious rib-tickling comedies, but alas, it turns out to be as much a retro-fit as a toupee on a bald head.
