Aamir Khan is all set to make his comeback with Sitaare Zameen Par, confirmed for a theatrical release on June 20, 2025. The announcement came via Aamir Khan Productions on May 5, along with the unveiling of the film’s first poster. But what’s making even bigger waves than the film itself is Aamir’s game-changing distribution strategy.

Skipping OTT: A First for Bollywood?

In a bold move, Sitaare Zameen Par will not premiere on any OTT platform post its theatrical run. Instead, Aamir Khan plans to adopt a pay-per-view model on YouTube, launching the digital release two months after the film hits cinemas.

According to The Hollywood Reporter India, this model is Aamir’s response to the perception that "non-spectacle" or smaller films are only suitable for OTT platforms. A source close to the project said, “Pay-per-view creates urgency and gives producers more control. This approach makes audiences choose to pay and engage, rather than passively consume content via subscriptions.”

An Indian Adaptation of ‘Campeones’

Directed by RS Prasanna and co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film is an official Indian adaptation of the 2018 Spanish hit Campeones. The comedy-drama revolves around individuals with different abilities, tackling themes of inclusion, friendship, and personal growth.

A Thematic Sequel to Taare Zameen Par

Aamir recently described the film as a “thematic sequel” to his 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par. While that film made audiences cry, this one is meant to uplift and entertain with humour. Aamir plays Gulshan, a brash and politically incorrect basketball coach whose journey with a special team teaches him humility, empathy, and the true meaning of being human.

Industry Impact

Aamir’s experimental distribution strategy has already sparked conversation within the industry. If successful, it could revolutionize how mid-budget and story-driven films are released and monetized in India.
