The Vaccine War Movie Review : A Moving Tribute To The Scientists Who Made India’S First Indigenous Vaccine Against Covid-19

Synopsis: Based on 'Going Viral', Dr. Balram Bhargava’s lucid account of the making of Covaxin, director Vivek Agnihotri efficiently dramatises the commitment and courage of the former director of the Indian Council of Medical Research and his dedicated team of scientists drawn from the ICMR and the National Institute of Virology.

The film hopes to acknowledge the efforts of India’s scientific community, the unsung heroes who managed to create India's indigenous COVID-19 vaccine ‘Covaxin’ within a span of seven months.

Review: The Vaccine War attempts to explore the development of Covaxin and the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film's portrayal of the scientists in the first half, giving them a voice and platform, is a strong point, highlighting the dedication and struggles of those working on the vaccine. However, the second half's shift towards being a government mouthpiece and countering allegations is less effective, undoing the sincerity and human emotion established earlier.

The film's criticism of the media and the idea that it's part of an "info war" may be a weak link in the story, especially if it veers into conspiracy theories and unsubstantiated claims. The film could have struck a balance between presenting different viewpoints and maintaining a fair narrative.

On the positive side, the film's script and technical aspects seem to be well-executed, and the performances of actors like Nana Patekar and Pallavi Joshi are appreciable. The film's focus on Indian scientists and their dedication during a global crisis is a commendable aspect.

However, the film might oversell the "atmanirbhar sentiment" (self-reliance) during a crisis, which may come across as immature. The film could have handled sensitive topics with care and accuracy, especially when dealing with real-world events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overall, The Vaccine War has its strengths and weaknesses, and viewers' reactions may vary based on their perspectives and expectations.
